Instructor: Liko Puha
June 17-26, 2005
Beginning Oli Workshop (1:30-2:45 pm)
An interactive workshop designed to acquaint students with oli, the ancient Hawaiian method of chanting. The aim of this class is to enhance the student's appreciation and understanding of this vocal art form. Instruction will explore the relationship between the various types of mele and oli styles while discovering the distinct vocalization techniques employed. Students will also actively participate in vocal exercises and learn a short mele through repetition and recitation. By the conclusion of the workshop, the students will hopefully have gained an increased understanding and appreciation of oli when listening to this beautiful vocal art form.

Intermediate Oli Workshop (4:30-5:30 pm)
Intermediate students will review and build upon previously learned material.* The object of this class is to strengthen breathing, pronunciation, vocal techniques and performance of mele. In addition, participants will learn a new short mele provided by the instructor. By the conclusion of the workshop, the students will have significantly increased their skill level in performing this beautiful vocal art form. * Eligibility is graduation from any of the previous seminars or by consent of instructor. Interested students please e-mail.
